Principal’s Welcome
Following extensive community consultation, Auburn High School was launched in 2014 with a vision of being a high performing government school of first choice in the local area. Ten years on and we have achieved that vision, with outstanding student learning growth, consistent teaching strategies and an excellent extracurricular program. Our Auburn Learner Qualities and diverse range of programs create global citizens who flourish in a positive learning environment. Students graduate with a toolkit of skills and knowledge that allows them to confidently take on any future opportunities.
Our exceptional teaching and learning programs and high level of student agency and voice have been recognised by the Department of Education and Training. We act as system leaders, advising and supporting other schools to achieve best practice. The positive and welcoming school culture we offer is underpinned by our school values of Diversity, Aspiration, Respect and Excellence (DARE). There is an established, vibrant student leadership program and a House system across Years 7-12 allowing students and staff to work collaboratively, enacting the school motto ‘Thinking Beyond’. This is lived through an extensive extra-curricular program offering, where all students are encouraged to be involved and excel in the areas of Communication, STEM, Arts, Philanthropy and Sport.
Our teaching and learning culture is focused on providing safe, supportive classrooms led by exemplary, passionate educators. Teachers participate in weekly Professional Learning Communities, using student outcomes and evidence to engage, differentiate and challenge students at their own level. We use research-based, effective pedagogical practices and student data to design a highly personalised program that ensures every student is challenged in their learning, regardless of their entry level. Student learning and wellbeing outcomes are further supported through our dynamic Education for Life program and parent engagement opportunities, creating time and space for learning and curiosity.
Auburn High School offers a unique combination of programs that creates depth of character, culture, and perspective in our local and global community. When enrolling at Auburn High School, students select one of our rigorous programs that target different approaches to learning. Our Junior students have the option of undertaking a Victorian Curriculum only education, or our Select Entry Accelerated Learning (SEAL) program from Year 7 to 9. This course is fully accredited by The Academy of Accredited SEAL Schools (TAASS), and supports students to complete four years of compacted Victorian Curriculum Standards in the space of three years.
Senior school students also have many options to achieve their goals and potential. The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), Vocational Major (VM), or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program. Student learning behaviours, skills and knowledge development are developed in Year 7 – 10 to ensure students prepared for any of these pathways. Many of our students accelerate in VCE subjects during Year 10. Extensive careers counselling opportunities as students approach the end of their Junior years assist in making well-informed and supported choices as they enter their Senior years of schooling.
Auburn High School is the only Victorian government High School accredited to teach the three-year French Binational program. FBN students complete the French National Curriculum and classes are taught by specialist staff. They undertake seventeen hours of French per week and complete the Brevet Diploma in June of Year 9. A partial immersion French course is also available. This involves seven hours French per week, of advanced French and one other subject taught in French. This accelerates their cultural, academic and language development. Every Auburn High School learns a minimum of four hours of Victorian Curriculum French per week in Years 7 – 9. We are proud of the extensive language programs at our school and these outstanding, differentiated specialist French language programs have received national and international recognition.
I extend an invitation to families to attend one of our scheduled school tours to learn more about the government school education we provide and observe first-hand the innovative and exciting programs that are happening in our school. Our Facebook page is also a useful resource for families interested in joining our community.
