School Council
School Councils play a crucial role in Victorian government schools. A school council develops a vision for the school in collaboration with all members of the school community and is actively involved in developing and endorsing the school’s strategic plan.
To be a part of the council, you don’t need any qualifications or experience – we need enthusiastic parents who want to help improve the learning outcomes for all students.
Elections for school council positions are completed annually by the end of March. All parents or guardians of students enrolled at the school can vote for candidates wanting to participate in the school council.
Key Functions
All school councils in Victoria operate under the Education and Training Reform Act 2006. Each school council is established by an Order of the Minister for Education, which specifies the council’s membership, size and configuration, its objectives, powers, functions and accountabilities and the role of its executive officer who is the principal. The school council has functions in setting and monitoring the school’s direction.
School councils have four primary responsibilities:
- Governance
- Strategic Planning
- Finance
- Policy and Review
Critical functions of school councils include:
- Maintaining school grounds and facilities
- Entering into contracts, regulating and facilitating after-hours use of school premises and grounds
- Reporting annually to the school community and the Department
- Representing and taking the views of the community into account
Council Reports
Each year, Council is responsible for preparing and sharing various annual and strategic reports with our community, including the 4 year Strategic Plan and Annual Implementation plan.
