Maths Games Challenge Update
The Victorian Maths Games Challenge
One Thursday lunchtime way back in March, an intrepid team of Year 7 and 8 mathematicians met for the first time, to take on the Victorian Maths Games Challenge. This year is the inaugural year for the challenge which has been hosted by the Victorian Department of Education in conjunction with the Maths Association of Victoria. We really weren’t sure what to expect, but we knew there would be a set of 6 modules released throughout the year and that our teams would need to work together on a set of online tasks.
Six months later and our challengers are still going strong. They have tested their powers of logic, their numerical reasoning and their quick-thinking estimation skills while sneaking in a quick bite of lunch at our weekly meetings. Each module has provided our challengers with three maths puzzles to unpack and a team challenge which they need to complete together. The collaboration within teams and between teams has been a real strength of our students.
While the leader board changes from time to time, we can proudly say that Auburn has been well represented throughout the competition. At this point in time Auburn High School teams are holding onto first, second and third place. As we work on the final module, we are excited to see where we will end up. Congratulations to all participants in the challenge; and to those who are still going strong – I am so impressed by your commitment and enthusiasm. What a lot of mathematical talent we have.
