Maths Games Challenge Update

Read Time: ( words)

The Victorian Maths Games Challenge

One Thursday lunchtime way back in March, an intrepid team of Year 7 and 8 mathematicians  met for the first time, to take on the Victorian Maths Games Challenge. This year is the inaugural year for the challenge which has been hosted by the Victorian Department of Education in conjunction with the Maths Association of Victoria. We really weren’t sure what to expect, but we knew there would be a set of 6 modules released throughout the year and that our teams would need to work together on a set of online tasks.

Six months later and our challengers are still going strong. They have tested their powers of logic, their numerical reasoning and their quick-thinking estimation skills while sneaking in a quick bite of lunch at our weekly meetings. Each module has provided our challengers with three maths puzzles to unpack and a team challenge which they need to complete together. The collaboration within teams and between teams has been a real strength of our students.

As the competition draws to a close, I am very proud to announce that Auburn teams achieved first, second and fourth place in the final standings. We look forward to meeting and playing against the Maths Challenge teams from other schools this week in a face-to-face challenge event to be held at Melton Secondary College. It will be a great way to wrap up an excellent year’s work. Congratulations to all participants. This really was a team effort.

Outstanding Success at the Berthe Mouchette French Poetry Competition!

We are delighted to celebrate the outstanding achievements of three Auburn High School students in the Alliance Française de Melbourne’s Berthe Mouchette French Poetry Competition!

In the Prix Spécial des Écoles Françaises – Secondaires (Poetry Writing) category, our students achieved an exceptional result, with first prize awarded to an Auburn High School student in each of Years 7, 8 and 9.

Congratulations to our talented young poets:

  • Year 7: Diane A-L – 1st Prize
  • Year 8: Elea V – 1st Prize
  • Year 9: Anna G – 1st Prize

This remarkable achievement highlights our students’ creativity, their developing command of the French language, and their ability to express their ideas and emotions through poetry.

We are incredibly proud of Diane, Elea and Anna for their dedication and success in this prestigious competition. Their achievements reflect the passion for French language and culture that we nurture at Auburn High School.

Peace and love (by Anna, 9F)

Science in Motion: Year 8 Binational Students Explore Mechanics

Our Year 8 Binational students have been investigating la mécanique (mechanics) in Science, exploring how to describe the movement of objects by analysing their trajectory and speed.

To put their learning into practice, students created their own chronophotographies — images showing the successive positions of a moving object at regular time intervals. They then analysed their images and plotted graphs to represent and interpret the motion.

This hands-on investigation brought together scientific observation, data analysis and mathematical skills, allowing students to see how physics and mathematics work together to explain the world around us.

Bravo to our Year 8 Binational students for their curiosity, scientific thinking and enthusiasm for learning!

Year 7 Art Excursions

Year 7 Art students have enjoyed Art excursions to NGV, to support their understanding of the Impressionism unit. Students explored both NGV International and the Ian Potter Centre, with a focus on French and Australian Impressionism. See below for student reflections on the day.

Going to the NGV was an amazing experience for me because I was so inspired by the artwork I saw. Especially the stained glass ceiling in the second NGV we went to. The instructors were  very helpful and I had a great time!

Amie Irene Inglis 7S

My favourite things about the Art Excursion this week was seeing the artworks and getting to draw one myself.I also had so much fun getting to spend time with my friends .I learned a lot about Impression art styles and the artists that did them like Claude Monet.

Rena Hitavi 7E

I enjoyed the experience of not only looking and appreciating the art but having a guide give us a more detailed description of where the art came from and what story it depicted. I enjoyed walking around the Ian Potter Centre analysing art with the workbook. My favourite part was hearing the story of the NGV’s stained glass ceiling.

Arna Raja 7B

My favourite things about the NGV Art Excursion were being able to see many different paintings and sculptures from France and the UK and identifying different artists and impressionists in the Art World. I loved seeing the ways the artists use special techniques and brush strokes to simplify and expand the universe their art is set in. This was also a good chance for me to get creative and to learn more history from art, and also to identify the motive and reason for making these amazing pieces of artwork. I have had such an amazing time exploring an identifying these artworks and I am excited to go to the NGV next year and explore new famous artworks and artists in the NGV International and the NGV.

Colin Stuart 7E

The NGV was a fun and informative excursion, we learned lots of stuff about impressionism, and art. By far my favourite part was when we entered the salon, it felt so huge and grand.

Jonathan Le 7S

At the art excursion, we explored impressionist artworks in both the international and the Australian gallery. We went through multiple rooms, each with examples of artworks from around that era. One of the artworks we saw was one of the 14 paintings of a street in Paris called the Boulevard Montmartre series. They are a series of paintings done from a balcony above the Boulevard Montmartre. The series is done by Camille Pissarro. We also saw some medieval statues of famous characters such as Saint Barbara, and we heard their stories.

Caleb Beattie-Hood, 7B

I liked the excursion because it was nice to roam around the gallery. i liked the different paintings and rooms with the big artworks, and i enjoyed walking around and learning about different paintings with our tour guide.

Lucia Gerbal 7F

At the NGV, we explored many different artworks that are both International and Australian. We went through many rooms with sculptures, traditional painting and impressionist paintings. My favourite part of the NGV was the Salon because I enjoyed exploring the Salon and looking at all the different paintings. I loved looking at the sculpture of Saint Barbora and I wonder how it was preserved for 600+ years! We also completed a worksheet in the Australian NGV were we had to find artworks and answer questions about the artwork. At the end we did a rough sketch of our favourite paining.

In Week 2 we celebrated students who completed the Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge with a pizza party.  Each of the students were presented with a certificate of achievement. Well done to all the students.

We are celebrating Halloween in the library. Students in the AHS Library Club have made decorations to contribute to the displays, participated in collaborative writing and made bookmarks.  It has been great to see Library Club increase in student attendance. Thank you to Miss Marina Pena for her support and help. A reminder we have three library clubs running during the week at lunch times.  On Mondays there is Library Club where we do a range of reading and writing activities. On Wednesdays there is Library Helpers Club and on Thursdays there is Storytellers and Podcasters Club.  Students are invited to come to the library at 1:15pm to participate in the club. We look forward to seeing you there. 🐈‍⬛🎃

Boroondara Literary Awards

Read Time: ( words)

In Week 1 of Term 4, our school was represented at the 2026 Boroondara Literary Awards, proudly presented in partnership with the Rotary Club of Balwyn at the Hawthorn Arts Centre.

Stories help us interpret and share our interactions with the world around us. They inspire, challenge, entertain and bring us together through shared experiences. Each year, the Boroondara Literary Awards provides a platform for writers of all ages and produces a published collection to celebrate these writers in their creativity and talent.

A massive congratulations goes to Tilda Hall (9S) for receiving 3rd place in the Young Writers Middle Prose for her piece “Over and Under” and Summer O’Keefe (10C) for receiving Highly Commended in Young Writers Senior Poetry for her piece “Forgive Me Father For I Have Sinned”.

“Having the opportunity to be a part of the Boroondara Literary Awards this year was a fantastic experience that I will never forget. It was surreal to be surrounded by so many talented young writers and to hear from experts in the field who had read my piece and enjoyed it. Working on my poem for submission was a really rewarding experience and I had a fantastic experience getting to celebrate both my own and the work of my peers at the ceremony. I encourage all young people with an interest in writing to submit, it’s an amazing opportunity!

My poem is about family dynamics, illness and trauma, exploring how a serious diagnosis can impact a mother-daughter relationship and the way both people view one another.”

-Summer O’Keefe (Recipient of the Highly Commended in Young Writers Senior Poetry)
